What July Fishing Looks Like Around Anna Maria Island

July is summer at full strength here—hot days, warm water, and plenty of fish that are ready to eat if you hit the right spots at the right time.

Instead of chasing one species all day and hoping for one big bite, my July Anna Maria Island fishing charters are all about steady action and variety.

On a typical July morning, we might:

  • Start early, before the heat really kicks in, drifting over a grass flat for trout and mixed species.
  • Slide over to a mangrove shoreline or dock line for snook and redfish when the light gets a little higher.
  • Spend time on a piece of structure or a ledge where the mangrove snapper bite is usually fast and fun.

I don’t build my summer around tarpon trips. Tarpon are amazing fish, but they’re also long-game, patience-heavy days that aren’t always the best fit for families, kids, or people who just want to catch a lot of fish.

Instead, July with me is about redfish, snook, trout, mangrove snapper, and whatever else wants to crash the party.

Mangrove Snapper: The Star of the Summer Show

If there’s one fish that really shines in July, it’s mangrove snapper.

They’re aggressive, they bite often, and when they’re fired up, it can feel like every drop gets bit. That makes them perfect for kids, beginners, and anyone who enjoys a lot of action.

We usually target mangrove snapper around:

  • Rock piles and ledges
  • Edges of channels and passes
  • Certain pieces of structure I’ve been fishing for years

I set you up with light tackle so you really feel every headshake and run. For smaller kids, that light gear makes a snapper feel huge, and I’m not going to lie—that’s half the fun.

The best part? Mangrove snapper are excellent on the table. At the end of the trip, I clean your catch so you can bring home fillets ready for the pan or the grill. Many visitors schedule a dinner at a local restaurant that cooks your catch, turning the charter into a full ocean-to-table kind of day.

Snook, Redfish, Trout, and Friends

Mangrove snapper may be the July headliner, but they’re not alone. On my Anna Maria Island fishing charters, we usually have a mixed bag on board by the time we head back to the dock.

Here’s what else we often see in July:

  • Snook – These are one of my favorite inshore fish. We find them along mangrove shorelines, around docks, and near passes where the current moves. Early and late in the day, they love to ambush a well-placed bait.
  • Redfish – Reds have a way of making you earn it. They hang around mangroves, oyster bars, and potholes on the flats. When you hook a good one on light tackle, you’ll feel why people love them.
  • Spotted seatrout – These often hang out over deeper grass flats. Trout are great numbers fish; we can sometimes pick off quite a few while drifting.
  • Bonus species – Spanish mackerel, jack crevalle, ladyfish, and others show up often enough to keep things interesting. These surprise hookups usually bring a lot of laughs and a few “whoa!” moments.

I tailor each trip to the group. If you want more meat fish to take home, we’ll spend a little extra time on snapper and other good-eating species. If you want more of a catch-and-release, light-tackle kind of day, we can do that too.

Kid-Friendly, Family-First Charters

Over the years, I’ve learned that the best days on the water are often family trips and kids’ first fish.

  • Safety is always the top priority. We use proper life jackets, keep the deck clear, and stay within conditions that are appropriate for your group.

Beating the July Heat and Timing Your Trip

Let’s be honest—July in Florida is hot. The good news is, we can work with it.

Most of my summer Anna Maria Island fishing charters are booked for:

  • Early mornings, catching the sunrise and the cooler part of the day
  • Later afternoon or early evening, when the sun is dropping and the fish are happy again

We also plan around the tide. Moving water is your friend, especially in July. Strong incoming or outgoing tides around passes, channels, and certain shorelines usually mean the fish are feeding and our baits look more natural.

I keep an eye on the weather and summer thunderstorms, and I’ll always be upfront about what to expect. If we need to shift times a bit to stay comfortable and safe, we’ll do it. The goal is simple: maximum fun, minimum sizzle.

What You Should Bring (And What I Provide)

I try to keep things easy. On my charters, I provide:

  • Fishing licenses
  • Rods and reels
  • Tackle and bait
  • Fish cleaning at the end of the trip, if you’d like to keep fish that are in season and within regulations

You just need to bring:

  • Sunscreen, preferably applied before we leave the dock
  • Polarized sunglasses and a hat
  • Light, breathable clothing—long sleeves are your friend in the sun
  • Drinks and snacks, especially water and sports drinks for hot days
  • A small cooler left in your vehicle for taking fillets home

If you have a favorite lucky hat, shirt, or even a favorite lure you want to try, bring it. I’m happy to work that into the day if it makes the trip more you.
